The Purpose of this Blog: Practicing the Presence of God
This blog is designed for one simple purpose. I wanted a place to explore, discuss and share experiences of practicing God's presence as taught by Brother Lawrence. Brother Lawrence was a lay monk who wrote the book "Practicing the Presence of God." For those who have not read the book, I especially recommend the edition published by SeedSowers. This edition also contains excerpts from the diary of Frank Laubach, a 20th century Christian missionary who tried to practice the presence of God. Like most great truths, Brother Lawrence's teachings are quite simple to understand, although they are challenging to carry out. You can find this version of the book on Amazon and other web sites. Try the following URL: Practicing the Presence of God
There are also versions of The Practice of the Presence of God that are in the public domain and I would encourage anyone who is interested to run a search to get a taste for this amazing piece of Christian literature.
My initial plan with this blog is to post some public domain portions of The Practice of the Presence of God and make some comments and observations from my own feeble efforts to live as Brother Lawrence teaches. I hope others will comment about their own experiences so that all of us can grow closer to our heavenly Father through mutual encouragement and support.
What's so important about this book? Why not start a blog about Christian living in general? The answer is simple. I think what Brother Lawrence teaches is so central that almost everything else we could discuss on the subject of growing closer to God is a branch from the main trunk. I truly believe that if you make a sincere effort to live and think and pray and act as Brother Lawrence and Frank Laubach recommend that you will necessarily grow closer to God. Brother Lawrence's little book and Laubach's diary contain simple, yet deep discussions of the journey two different men took into the heart of God. The book doesn't offer a list of do's and don'ts, but focuses on the discipline of prayer. While I think this book is a tremendously important piece of Christian literature, it is not a substitute for the Bible. Everything you read in this book or in this blog or anywhere else you should test against Scripture.
This blog is written with some assumptions. This blog is written with the assumption that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, that you want to grow closer to your Heavenly Father and that you want to truly know Him. It is also written with the assumption that you have read the book, "Practicing the Presence of God." If you haven't given your life to Jesus Christ I hope you will find something here that makes you want to take that step. If you haven't read the book, give it a try. It doesn't matter where you are along the path; your thoughts and experiences may make a huge difference for another reader.
I will try to moderate this blog with a very light hand, if at all. I want to encourage open discussion of this Christian discipline by all who are interested whether they are new believers or have walked with the Lord for decades. I encourage anonymous comments. What is most important is that we share our experiences for our common benefit.
